What is a Licensed Legal Paraprofessional (LLP)?

LLPs are not attorneys.  LLPs are licensed paralegals who practice law without attorney supervision, who have satisfied requirements pertaining to education, experience and passing the Colorado LLP Bar Exam in order to obtain their licensure through the Colorado Office of Attorney Regulation Counsel (OARC) to provide legal services to clients within the limited scope of practice in the following areas:

  • Dissolution of Marriage or Civil Union
  • Legal Separation
  • Initial or Modification of Allocation of Parental Rights, including parentage determinations.
  • Declaration of Invalidity of Marriage
  • Establishing or Modification of Child Support and/or Maintenance
  • Protection Orders, Name Changes and Adult Gender Designation Changes
  • Filing and Responding to Motion for Remedial Contempt Citations under C.R.C.P. 107
  • Mediation and more.

The Colorado Supreme Court adopted Colorado Court Rule 207.1 in 2023, authorizing LLP’s to practice family law in a limited scope in order to meet the needs of self-represented litigants at an affordable cost.

LLPs, like attorneys, can enter into a contractual relationship with their clients, interview the client, review documents with the client and explain documents and orders to the client, assisting and negotiating in mediation, and with some limitations, appearing at hearings.

WHY HIRE AN LLP vs. AN ATTORNEY?

Hiring a Licensed Legal Paraprofessional (LLP) instead of an attorney can be a highly cost-effective option, particularly in family law matters. LLPs provide essential legal assistance at a significantly lower cost while upholding high standards of competency and professionalism. For clients, choosing a legal paraprofessional over an attorney can result in substantial savings—often ranging from hundreds to thousands of dollars. LLPs typically charge a lower hourly rate, offering clients the opportunity to avoid the higher fees associated with attorneys. Additionally, many LLPs work on a flat-fee basis, which helps to keep legal costs predictable and affordable. For instance, on average, LLP accepts uncontested family law cases for a flat fee, bundled or unbundled pricing providing clients with a clear and manageable pricing structure.
